#SonicFriday

#SonicFriday was an online project that collected people’s memories related to music, sound and sound technologies using digital platforms. It took place during the summer of 2020 and was run by the National Science and Media Museum in collaboration with the University of Leicester’s School of Museum Studies. The project was designed by the PhD researcher Stefania Zardini Lacedelli, thanks to AHRC funding from the Midlands4Cities Doctoral Training Partnership. Each Friday, the museum proposed a different theme from their Sound Technologies collection and invited users of their social media channels – Twitter, Facebook and Instagram – to participate, commenting on the social media posts with personal musical memories and sound stories. Through six months of creative online engagement with sound, more than 300 memories were collected across different platforms. All social media contributions, memories and stories shared were collected and used to enrich collection interpretation, blog posts and exhibitions but also contribute to the birth of new digital narratives such as Twitter exhibitions, thematic playlists, multimedia galleries and sound maps. This is an experimental collection aiming to capture an online, digital project. Therefore the outputs are ‘non-traditional’ in nature – YouTube playlists, Twitter posts, sound maps - as they were designed to find new ways to narrate the story of the objects and encourage people to interact with the sound technologies collection online. The sharing of sounds and memories in this way stimulated a deep personal and emotional engagement that is usually difficult to create in physical galleries.
