‘The Building and Operation of Industrial Museums’ was one of three silent films made between 1927 and 1928 by Charles T Gwynne. It was made on behalf of the project ‘The Museum of the Peaceful Arts’ which proposed a new science museum in New York City. Gwynne travelled with a film crew to create films to promote the project among New York elites. The film showed how Europeans in the 1920s enjoyed the Science Museum (London), Technical Museum (Vienna), Conservatoire National des Arts et Metiers (Paris), and the Deutsches Museum (Munich). It was screened to the public in 1928 then vanished for almost 90 years before being rediscovered in the British Film Institute’s (BFI) vaults. When it was produced, this film did not have its own soundtrack. In 2016, funded by a grant from the Leverhulme Trust, the Science Museum employed composer Jean-Philippe Calvin to research the new sound technologies that were developed in the 1920s and create a new score for the film. This collection holds the outputs related to this project.

The score was premiered in the Science Museum in London on 2 October 2016. Jaume Sastre-Juan delivered a 15 minute contextual introduction to the film and a small orchestra supported the film with a performance.
