Abstract
This paper considers the contrasting representations of the history, and contemporary practice, of technology in the Science Museum - past, present, and future. It will start with a brief case study of our visitors’ responses to history of technology artefacts. The paper will then outline the long-standing tension in the museum between contemporary science communication and the history of technology. This will lead on to a brief overview of contemporary museum representations of the history of technology. Lastly, the paper will suggest how the Museum might interpret the history of technology for future audiences, by striking a balance between history and a contemporary science communication approach.
