This paper explores the wider context for the pulley block-making machinery devised by Marc Brunel and Henry Maudslay, and installed at the Portsmouth dockyard 1804-1807. It uses the machines to suggest the idea of 'proto-globalisation', a first step in a tentative process of globalising trade networks.
