Abstract
An intriguing brass clock inhabits a gleaming glass case in the Science Museum's “Making the Modern World” gallery. The clock's mechanical construction could place it among the great examples of 18th century timepieces, but its label shows it was constructed only a year ago. The clock's face shows an array of temporal information—the position of the stars, the phase of the moon, and the year—but none of the standard measures of hours, minutes, and seconds.
