Abstract
Sonic Futures is an AHRC-funded engagement and impact project exploring listening at the National Science and Media Museum. The project tackles the problem of how to tell the story of sound technologies by working with audience listeners. Our listeners collaborate with artists to build and test new audible exhibits that take us into the sounds of the past. The question of how we listen to museum collections, and how we can build exhibits that help us to listen differently, is at the heart of our work. Following the temporary closure of the National Science and Media Museum in March 2020 due to COVID-19, the project moved online: we worked together through lockdown to create digital exhibits for computers and mobile phones. In November 2020 the participating artists came together to discuss the project and how it has shaped their practice and thinking about sound in museum collections. This report captures the transcription of the interview.
