Abstract
Science City 1550–1800: The Linbury Gallery, which opened in 2019, explores the science of early modern London, showcasing the scientific instrument collections of the Science Museum, Kings College London and the Royal Society. In each of the gallery’s four sections, an abstracted room-set-style display evokes places in London that contributed to London’s scientific culture. Each display is accompanied by a digital label that interprets the objects and other features.
This is a working draft of the text for the display that evokes the workshop of instrument-maker Elias Allen. Allen, active in the early 1600s, was the first mathematical instrument-maker to make a living solely from the manufacture of such devices, unlike his predecessors who had to supplement their income by engraving maps and bookplates.
